Top Ten: Motherhood…not for the faint of heart

I had lots of people tell me, "Oh you just wait until YOU have kids."  It was in that moment, that I smiled, but I really wanted to punch them in the face.  After all, I knew everything.  And, really, how hard could having kids be?Oh ye, of little faith.  They were right. The last few weeks, months, make that years, of parenthood, I've learned a trick or two and whole lot of lessons the hard way.  I just thought I'd ...

Wow.

Today marked a huge milestone for Luke, he's officially five months old today!  I am in disbelief.  And crazy in love.  He had his five-month developmental assessment at Dell Children's today...more on that this weekend.  Overall report is good.  Everyday, EVERYDAY I am thankful for his gift of life and amazed that the little boy we thought we would never bring home from the NICU is sleeping soundly in my arms. With that thankfulness is also the realization that everyday there ...

Calling all superheros!

Oh finally - the birthday boy got his party!!If you'll recall, John Paul's BIG day was put on the backburner due to Luke's unexpected hospital stay and a nasty case of strep throat inflicted upon the birthday boy himself.Ick and Ick.We went small this year (hoo-rah for that brilliant idea) and for once, I didn't go all out.  I mean, I went all out, but not ALL out...as I've done a time or two.  Ahem.Anyhoodle, we had a fantastic time.  ...

Top Ten: Make Lent Count

A few of my friends posted on facebook recently that they don't celebrate Lent...and that got me thinking.  About a lot of things actually.#1  Is Lent actually a holiday to celebrate?  After some thinking, I think it is.  What's not to celebrate as we prepare our hearts for Easter?#2  Lent isn't an all-exclusive Catholic holiday.  Shoot, when Scott and I started dating, my Protestant self fell in love with the 40 days of preparation.  Quite frankly, I wish more Protestant churches ...

Perspective

It's a funny thing, isn't it?The past week has been a little icky around here.  Luke got that lovely RSV, my running training got majorly interrupted, the kids were out of school yesterday and were all up in each other's business, our "cooking at home" has gotten blown out of the water, we're tired of being sleep deprived, yadda, yadda, yadda.  And I started feeling sorry for myself.  It's all grounds for a legitimate pity party, right? And then I saw a ...

Super Bowl

Last weekend, we enjoyed a Super Bowl party at a neighbor's house with lots of other fun neighbors.  It was great.  We have SO been searching for a neighborhood with folks that wave when you drive down the street, that stop you on your walk and you end up chatting so long that you scrap your walk, that has kids our kids' age and informal playdates happen often...  You know, the moon. After seven years of looking and living in Texas, ...

Howdy!

... and welcome to the chaos. I know a thing or two about big families (I've got 6 kids), carpool, Catholic converts, the Texas Aggies, prematurity, date nights with Mr. Whitaker, organization and party planning, but I still don't know why it's so hard for my kids to  put up their shoes. My Texas-sized heart is honored to have you here! Contact me at kathrynwhitakertx@gmail.com
