Master Bath: The Design
Now, to the good stuff.
The hardest part, for me, was choosing a tile and color scheme. You walk into the store *thinking* you know. Then you quickly realize it’s like Sonic and choosing a soft drink combination. There really are 300,000 different combinations.
There are two really fun parts of this whole design and every time we look at our bathroom, we’ll remember them with fond memories. Several months ago, Scott and I decided to take the Texas Monthly BBQ Fest challenge. We’ve been driving all over the state, eating BBQ at the top 50 joints in the state, and earning stickers so we can claim our YETI prizes. The way to a girl’s heart is through BBQ on her way to YETI, evidently. Anyway…
When we visited the cutest joint in Jefferson, Texas, we were driving out of town when we spotted a slew of antique claw foot tubs. SOLD. It got us talking about our dream and then, it happened. That date day proved to be a fruitful one. When else would we have been in that sweet little East Texas town?!
The other involved a fancy gala. Back in August, we had the chance to be the guests of friends attending Celebrando!, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual event. There, we were introduced to the male entrepreneur of the year, Nic, from Clay Imports. His tile had me at hello. The rest is history.
And, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how utterly invaluable a dear friend of ours was when we started the initial design. Chris is an architect here in Austin and for a few years our kids attended the same Catholic school. He has such a good design eye and really gave us great feedback. Chris, we owe you a case of Shiner!
Enough yapping. Here it is.
I don’t even know if rustic Spanish meets Texan is a thing, but it is now! That show-stopper patterned floor tile will also go up the wall behind the bathtub, making that area the focal point of the room. And to think I was going to scrap a bathtub altogether!
The fixtures are all wood/iron and black. We’re warming it up with some wood elements in the chandelier above the tub and in the water closet. Plus, we’re adding that barn door mirror on the wall that leads to the master closet.
The shower will be tiled in a glazed clay brick in white, with a pop of color on the floor and in the shower inset. My IG followers will just have to wait until the final reveal to see what we chose!
I’ve replicated the curves of the floor tile in the chandeliers and in the oval mirrors that will be above the sinks. We went with a blue/gray cabinet after much deliberation and the granite counters will be neutral with a few flecks of muted blues to break up the white.
For the walls, the jury is still out on the white. Lawd. Who knew THAT would be such a project?
And that’s your design. Bear with me these next few weeks as I share some progress posts. I’m pretty certain we’ll have it done the week after Thanksgiving, around December 1. A girl can dream that the bulk of it will be complete around Thanksgiving.
Cue the bubble bath dreams.
My sweet mama has VERY strong opinions about most everything, but especially bathtubs; claw foot are FAR superior to even the fanciest jacuzzis. I grew up with this ingrained in me, and she found and had refinished a gorgeous, old clawfoot tub. Now, I am the proud owner of a home that came with a brand spankin’ new jetted rub, and hey, I love them both. I’m really not picky when it comes to long hot soaks! However, esthetically, the clawfoot wins hands down! Pics look great my friend!
I can’t wait to see the finished product! We are in the 5th month of our post-Hurricane Matthew repair/remodel. I was totally unprepared for the time and talent required in home design when someone (myself, ha ha) is not smart enough to hire a professional. I know that this is your area of expertise–do you have certain blogs you frequent for ideas?
God bless you! I’ve always been a fan of Hi Sugarplum! She has great style and isn’t afraid to take some risks.
