Before & After: The Master Bedroom

This was one of the first rooms we redecorated in the house when we moved in two years ago.  To be fair, it was the LAST room that got decorated in our old house.  Mom and Dad always move to the bottom of the decorating pile, don’t they?

Because I had all the bedding and most of the furniture, it was just a matter of making it work and adding a few accessories in the new space.  We adore the blue.  It is peaceful and tranquil – a far cry from what I experience on a day-to-day basis once I step outside my room each morning 🙂  When we painted the room, we went out on a limb and painted the ceiling, too.  We had this great recessed area, trimmed in molding and we really wanted it to be highlighted.  I was a little scared, but now I am all about painting the ceilings.  Don’t be afraid!!

Long ago, Scott and I deemed our bedroom a toy-free zone.  The kids know it and actually follow the rule.  Best rule we every made.  Well, that and the fridge must always have Dr Pepper.  Details.

I searched and searched in my old files, but couldn’t find a before picture.  But, pretty much EVERY bedroom in our house looked the same.  White. White. White.  White walls, white carpet, white baseboards.  I felt like I was in the crazy house.  Momma needs color.  So, here is one of the bedrooms that is a close second to what we had initially. 

One neat story about after photo #2.  That pew you see in the bedroom has special meaning to Scott and I.  When Will was baptized at our parish in Indiana, it was just before we went through a major church remodel.  Part of the update was to get rid of all the old pews.  We signed up for the lottery and ended up getting a 12-foot beast.  It was laquered in classic 1960s dark, horrible stain.  Scott spent HOURS sanding, stripping and refinishing it.  He also cut the pew in half.  We gave half to some sweet Dominican Sisters we know and put the other half in our bedroom.  It is an awesome reminder of a parish that renewed our faith and gave us 7 of the 10 Godparents for our children.  I love that beautiful work of art!

Oh, and if you’re wondering – hey, don’t they have a master suite?  Why, yes, we do.  And when I save enough money you will get to see the hideous before and glorious after pictures of the master bath remodel.  Let’s just say the hooker lights, white carpet, linoleum and brass will be heading to the dumpster.  For now, it’s just an incentive to get ready really quickly each morning 🙂
