Fertility and my Love-Hate Relationship with It

A little more than 16 years ago, I sat on the couch with my new baby in my arms and tears in my eyes.

“Scott, I can’t have any more babies. It’s too hard.”

Back in 2004, I was the mom of two and I had hit my wall. We had just started practicing a natural method of birth control, Natural Family Planning (NFP), and I absolutely hated it. Our baby wasn’t sleeping (he had horrific colic) and I felt sorely inadequate as a mom and wife.

I mean, y’all know how the story ends (we now have six children, including a preemie), but I’d like to share the in between. How did we get from me, wallowing in my state of overwhelm, to peace? I’ll be sharing bits and pieces of my story, as well as answering your questions about our journey and my reliance on natural birth control over on Instagram this week. And, I’ll be posting a video over on YouTube, as well, for those not on the ‘gram.

No question is too personal, or too silly or too basic. Ask away! You can leave them here in the comments, over on Instagram or through direct message. Speaking frankly, I think we do a terrible job of talking about the hardness of following a life of NFP, sharing the realities of infertility and shaming families who we think aren’t doing it all right.

For more information about NFP, I suggest tapping into You, Me and NFP, the Couple to Couple League or Off the Charts.

And, here’s a quick five-minute video of our story. Thanks to You, Me and NFP for asking me to film it!

Thanks for sharing this Kathryn! NFP and the blessings and struggles that come with it is something we all need to talk and hear more about!

Great video, Kathryn! NFP has been a vital part of our decision making process with God also for the past 15 years. There have been good times and bad and surprises along the way, but it truly has brought about great communication in our marriage. It has helped us to trust in God’s Divine Providence more. Thank you for sharing your story!
