On Celebrating Halloween

For us, Halloween has always been fun, wholesome and completely harmless. I wish I could say the same for all people who celebrate All Souls’ and All Saints’ Days.

All it takes is a quick run down the aisle at Target to realize many costumes are tacky, tasteless and way too gory. Some families choose not to celebrate Halloween at all. Hey, to each their own.

We choose to take part and make it a fun holiday because it totally can be! Here are family pics from the last couple of years.

Interestingly, earlier this week my oldest and I had an honest conversation about his costume choice this year. He’s in sixth grade. Yeah. The costume front has been educational. Here’s a snippet of our talk.

“Grim reaper?” Nope.
“Werewolf?” Maybe, but no blood running out of your mouth. (heavy sigh from the 11yo)
“Can I just go as a guy in a black robe?” Um, so your response to people when they ask about your costume will be: Eh, I’m just a kid in a black robe who wants candy. Try again.

That actually got a giggle.

I suggested a few saints. He quickly brushed me off. “No offense, Mom, but no.” None take dear. I get it. I hope.

I *think* we’ve found a winner but I’ve been sworn to secrecy. Will’s only costume request was that he be cool and not a kid.

My, my. We’ve come a long way from the elephant and Mr. Incredible costumes.

The heart-to-heart with Will once again reminded me of my obligation as a parent. Guide, not dictate. Love, not suffocate. We are here to put rules in place but ultimately I pray the lesson takes root in his own heart.

My parting advice? If the costume glorifies you and not God, you best put it back on the sale rack.

Thor and pirate princess for us. I feel like i’ll be on the verge of that talk in a few years, however. Sigh.

It doesn’t get easier as a grown-up, either! I remember trying to find a costume for a Halloween party when I was in my 20’s (waaaaay back before I had kids. Yep, I remember a few things from then!) and trying to find something that was tasteful (there was even a questionable Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz…wha??) was really, really hard.
