Medalist in the House!

Over the weekend, Will participated in the PSIA district competition (Private Schools Interscholastic Association).  It’s kinda like the private school version of UIL.  There were a ton of events and Will participated in four:  spelling, dictionary skills, social studies and vocabulary.  He placed in the top six in all four – whoa.  He took home FIRST in spelling (he’s state-bound in late April), THIRD in dictionary skills and social studies and SIXTH in vocabulary.  To quote twitter: #proudparentingmoment

Spelling has always been his strongest suit, so I was not at all surprised to see him do well.  I was, however, nervous as a cat during the ribbon announcements.  He had some stiff competition, all from our school, and I knew it was going to be close.  He was oh-so-close in going to state in dictionary skills.  He missed it by one question.  Next year.  For social studies, it was just a district event this year.  We are really hoping they make it a state-wide contest next year.  Questions ranged from Texas history, U.S. history, Reconstruction and current events.  Y’all, that test was hard!  As for vocabulary, that was even harder.  Think pre-PSAT words.  We had to pull the dictionary out on several occasions to get the pronunciations correct.

My new word?  Querulously.  Go look it up, don’t be so querulous.  I’m not doing the work for you!

In all, our school placed tops in elementary and middle school divisions and we competed against several other area private schools.  It was a really fun day.  Our school had a strong showing and the energy was tangible.  We were able to connect with many friends from our old school and I even ran into Luke’s neurosurgeon.  His children must be brilliant 🙂

In all, it was a fantastic day and I am SO PROUD of our oldest.  Will, tear it up at state, buddy!  Oh, and can you spell check my emails?
