East Coast Adventure: Easy Living in NOLA

Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing bits and pieces of our epic road trip to the east coast. It was 13 days filled with joy, sibling fights, a bazillion rest stops, one major meltdown on the side of I-10, great memories and lots of hugs with awesome people. Oh, and we saw a ton of cool stuff, too. You can read all about it by city: New Orleans, LA; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Washington, D.C. and Knoxville, TN.

Here. We. Go.

Because our sweet, reliable, amazing Honda Odyssey was hovering close to 230,000 miles on her, we opted to let her sit this 3,700-mile road trip out and rent a van. What was originally supposed to be an 8-seat capacity Suburban turned into a 12-passenger Sprinter (hallelujah hands) at no extra cost to us. Thanks for screwing up Enterprise!

The trip to NOLA was largely uneventful, until we realized the van had no DVD player and the portable one we brought wasn’t charged. That made from some real nice family time. {sarcasm font} But, we powered on and arrived in NOLA in one, barely-holding-it-together, piece. The highlight of our time in the Big Easy was a three-way tie between street cars, Hansen’s snowballs and Parkway poboys. What can I say, our family likes to eat.

Oh, and it’s not a trip to NOLA without beignets at Cafe Du Monde. That place is worth the hype {except the bathrooms!}. Can I get an Amen?

Just a pro tip. When the Cathedral has etched in stone (no really) times, a bulletin listing times, and a TV screen publishing signs of daily confessions? It’s a lie. A complete and total lie. We waited by the ferns in the back, but alas, no priest ever came to hear my confession. Maybe if you wait in line it still counts? #andotherliesitellmyself

We got quite the education on the street car back to our house. The Essence conference was going on and we had some “very” lively ladies join us for the Bourbon Street leg. Ah, New Orleans, always giving me opportunities to talk about temperance and right judgment. I’m pretty sure the snowballs made up for it.

The rain kept us at bay most of the day, but we got in lots of miles, saw some beautiful spots, met some lovely people and have more stories than I should publish here.

You’ve left me wanting more – like offering me a bite of the beignet and not letting me finish 😉

How awesome would it be to travel in a sprinter?! I have never been to New Orleans (or any of Louisiana for that matter), and it’s on the list of to-do’s. Looking forward to more stories from your adventure and learning from your experience with road trips. I am {thisclose} to getting the hubby to agree to one for next summer with our family!
