Carnivore, I Am

When Texas Monthly {a fabulous magazine in the Lone Star} comes calling, you answer. It appears they needed volunteers to help staff their sixth annual BBQ Fest so they hit up our 4-H club here in North Austin.

Will and I were happy to assist.

The best part? We got to sample the goodness before working our shift. For free.

The top 50 BBQ joints in Texas are invited to participate, so it was pretty much like eating the “best of the best” in one place. They hosted the event in downtown Austin, right in front of the Long Center. I believe we call that Texas heaven. Some of the joints included Franklin’s, Snowe’s, Two Bros., Cranky Franks, Opies, La Barbecue and more. Sadly, we didn’t make the Franklin’s line (it was an hour and a half long when we got there!) but our favorite brisket, by far, was Cranky Frank’s in Fredericksburg. We’re gonna have to stop by there the next time we’re in town.

We definitely got our fill of pork butt, brisket, ribs and sausage, with a few sides of Gourdough’s. We’re already counting down the days until next year’s event.

I love a good brisket – even though I’m from Lexington, NC (home of the best pork BBQ around!) My dad recently got a smoker and is now in the process of practicing brisket. We have been enjoying the results!
