Eight Really *Is* Great: I’m Pregnant!
Fridays are usually reserved for my 7 quick takes. But, today you’ll just get six, for obvious reasons. Forgive me, Jen.
Yes. I’m pregnant!!!! And I really, truly couldn’t be any happier than I am in this moment. Scott and I have been sitting on this news for what feels like forever. We found out waaaay back in the middle of August. I’ve been permanently happy (and slightly nauseous and tired) since then. We felt like we had the best secret and it was so lovely to just hold onto it for a while. Just us and God. But, now that my belly is giving me away, it’s time to tell you, too. Due date is April 30, 2014.
I think I’m going to defer to Jim Gaffigan’s chapter on big families in his new book, Dad is Fat. One, I can only hope to be that funny. In the meantime, I will laugh myself into oblivion. And, two, why is my fertility and the size of our family such a personal topic for the entire northern hemisphere? Jim and I share that soapbox. He’s a funny man. You know, for a guy with five kids.
Speaking of Gaffigan, Scott’s been listening to his book on the drive home. Every night, I get the chapter synopsis. It’s almost as funny as the book. You should see Scott stop breathing because he’s laughing so hard. “I mean, with the first kid we had the baby showers and the parties and the endless celebrations. With the fifth, I was all, ‘let’s just announce it on Twitter.'” Hold on, gotta catch my breath.
The kids completely wigged out when we told them. Yes, they were the first to know. That’s how we always roll. Scott caught it all on video. Thank you iPhone for capturing one of my most precious memories to date. Last Friday pretty much rocked. We decided to tell the kids first so we could ride their wave of happiness.
In answer to all your burning questions: NO, we’re not finding out; YES, we are elated; NO, I have no idea how we’ll figure out the rooms or if we’ll buy a new van and YES, the first ultrasound showed a beautiful, healthy baby. The kids tell me it looks like a spider in the ultrasound photo. And, they’re all wondering if a new kid means no leftovers. It’s a good thing somebody worries about the details around here.
There is so much more to say (y’all know me), but you’ll have to wait until next week. Now that the news is public and my jeans are officially too tight, I guess we’re really having a baby! I’m off to enjoy some Italian soda and caffeine-free Dr Pepper.
