Edible Science: The Animal Cell

Last weekend Will kept telling me about his “edible cell project” for science class. Because we only had one million things going on, I must’ve filed it into the “I’ll add that to the later list.” On Sunday evening, he finally got serious and after I looked at his outline, I realized perhaps he should’ve started earlier. On a whim, I went to my go-to, St. Pinterest. Man, was there some inspiration.

Will looked it over and came up with a great idea. I picked up the necessary candies and got the cake mix and waited for school dismissal. Unbeknownst to me, the Boston Marathon bombing happened. While the world was watching horrific coverage, Will and I were in the kitchen having a blast. I didn’t even see the news until he went to bed. I am SO grateful for the time the two of us spent together, and even more so after seeing what happened during the marathon.

May I present, proof of one of the most fun afternoons I’ve had with Will in quite some time.

Looking for an easy school science project? The recipe for this super fun edible animal cell includes boxed cake, icing and a tubload of candy.

Ingredient list:
One boxed cake mix (made two 9″ cakes)
Store-bought white icing
Toothpicks and paper
Lots of candy

One cake was used as the base and then we cut a smaller hole from the other cake and placed it on top of the bottom layer, already iced. Will decided he wanted to tint the “nucleus” so I pulled out some pink food coloring and that did the trick. He did a great job choosing all the candy ingredients, labeling and placing everything.

He made this graphic design momma very proud.Looking for an easy school science project? The recipe for this super fun edible animal cell includes boxed cake, icing and a tubload of candy.

Super cute! We just got finished doing the same thing, but they did the edible cell in school and then we had to do one at home from a different medium! Love yours!

This is awesome. If only we had something so cool to study (then eat) during biology. Way to go you two!

Hi Kathryn! I found your blog from CMO and I love it! I’ve been looking for some blogs to follow written by fun, hip, Catholic moms (like me, haha!) and I am so happy to have found yours. I live in crazy CA and have two little ones (1 and 3), work part time, and am so thrilled to read about your family and your approach to life. I love your Sunday Mass dress up shots and was inspired to add a few nice things during a 40% sale at Banana Republic. I live near the beach so flip flops and tanks are not out of place at our church, believe it or not. But somewhere between that and a wool suit lies a happy medium I think – a nice cardigan with chunky jewelry perhaps? I also share your appreciation of mailed invitations and am currently battling a friend of mine who wants Punchbowl for her shower. Glad I’m not the only Luddite out there! Thank you for the time you take to write this blog and I look forward to reading!

Karen, I’m super happy you’re here. And, even more flattered I’m ‘fun and hip’ – who knew. Power to the paper invite!

I’ve never seen one done as a cake. That is cool! We’ve always done the “in a bag” version with gelatin. How nice that you could do it together!
