Charleston: Day 4 (Our Last!)
This week, I’m sharing my southern getaway to Charleston, S.C., with my husband and no kids (first time in four years!) I’m dishing on food, hot spots and some fun stories. You can follow along from Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.
Oh, I hope I haven’t bored you with all the reminiscing from our adult-only getaway to Charleston. It was just too fun not to share.
Our last day in Charleston we finally got a dose of yucky weather. The rain that hit Texas earlier in the week made it’s way to South Carolina. It started out chilly and slightly drizzly, that’s a minor problem when you neglect to bring a warm jacket or an umbrella.
We ate a quick breakfast at the B&B, packed and checked out of our sweet residence. The people there were so kind and the location was just ideal!
We loaded the car and then hit a few last shopping spots for kids’ gifts before heading to lunch. I mean, could we really go back to Texas without pralines and moon pies?
At the recommendation of that sweet couple at last night’s restaurant, we enjoyed our last meal at Magnolia’s on East Bay Street. Scott finally enjoyed his very own shrimp and grits (yum-o) and I tried out the buttermilk fried chicken breast with cracked pepper biscuits, mashed taters and collard greens. They’re known for their biscuits and I inhaled every one. We got our pecan pie to go and ate it back in the Lone Star State. Five states away and it still rocked.
TRAVEL TIP #8:
Book a mid-day flight out of Charleston. By then, all the business travelers are gone. We walked straight up to security, no waiting.
We had a horrific flight from Charleston to Charlotte (thank goodness I took that picture before the flight). I’m surprised I didn’t use the “bag” the airline provides. Thank the good Lord it was only a 34-minute trip. Yes, I counted. We barely made our connection, but after a Ginger Ale and no more bumps I finally felt like myself again. We cued up the iPad and watched “Zero Dark Thirty” and that made the nearly three-hour flight go much faster. By the time we touched down in Austin, I was ready to hug some kids’ necks. It’s a bit of a tradition after we take a vacation. To reacclimate ourselves we always feast on some good ‘ol Texas BBQ from Rudy’s. To me, there is none better. No pictures of that, it didn’t last long enough!
And, that’s a wrap. Charleston was so, so good to us!

You can’t leave Charleston without feasting on some shrimp and grits. One of my favorite places in the whole world. Just sitting here thinking about the battery makes me smile.
Totally agree. That place can cook them!
Kathryn,
Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. I would love to visit Charleston some day. Seems like a very nice place for a get-away and I do agree that time alone with hubby is soooo sweet and rare. Glad you were blessed to have the time together.
What a wonderful trip… what wonderful memories!
Years from now, you and your children will cherish your writings and pictures.
God bless!

Would it be wrong of me to almost copy your trip? So many of the things you did sound amazing. Some day I will get to Charleston. I just hope that “some day” is in the not-to-distant future. Thanks for sharing your vacation with us!
Copy away, Nicole! When you go, I guarantee you’ll fall in love. It’s a beautiful place.
