The Vlog: A Maiden Voyage

You asked for it. Prepare yourself for the twang. I talk cookbooks, pantry locks and getting six kids to bed. But, it may be the text I get from Scott a few moments in that saves the vlog.

Happy watching! And, please, be nice to me in the comments. Yay or nay on the chatty? Do you like your Team Whitaker vlogged or do you preferΒ me in text form? Don’t worry, after watching this I’m most likely to hit you with the written word!

Mwah!

It says the video does not exist. πŸ™ I was looking forward to hearing your Texas twang!

    • Kathryn on September 15, 2014 at 8:58 am

It’s there now! Thanks for letting me know.

    • Catholic Lawyer Mama on September 15, 2014 at 8:59 am

      Got the same message. Boo!

      • Kathryn on September 15, 2014 at 9:01 am

I just re linked it. Let me know if you’re still getting the error!

        • Catholic Lawyer Mama on September 15, 2014 at 9:09 am

It worked. I really liked it! Something about seeing and hearing someone “in person” (okay, not really, but close enough) makes it seem less like I’m “reading a blog” versus “hearing from a real person”. I know that probably doesn’t make any sense (because, duh, I wouldn’t be reading a blog if I wasn’t looking to hear experiences/advice/info from a real person), but just my knee-jerk. I hope you do it again, but also keep up writing the blog too! Both are great!

  2. Leanne on September 15, 2014 at 9:25 am

I vote for more vlogs! You inspire me regularly and hearing your voice made you all the more “real” to me!!

  3. Bonnie on September 15, 2014 at 9:43 am

    I love your voice.
omg about the bird in the wall.
    And give me more vlogs!

    • Kathryn on September 15, 2014 at 10:54 am

I know, right? Still having bad flashbacks from that bird experience. EEK!

  4. Kristin on September 15, 2014 at 10:19 am

So nice to see you in “person”!

  5. Jules on September 15, 2014 at 10:29 am

Two of my favorite bloggers [this includes you!] posted videos this month and I *LOVE* hearing the voices to go with the pictures and writing. So fun. Also, unrelated, your hair is so cute. I know we’ve seen it in pics, but for some reason it looks even more awesome on the video. Would it be weird to play this video for my stylist?! πŸ™‚ Have a super week, and thanks for the Vlog

    • Claire in the UK on September 15, 2014 at 3:47 pm

Julie you’re not odd re: Kathryn’s lovely hair cut. When I last got my hair done I took the photo of KW from the website and showed it my hairdresser!

    • Claire in the UK on September 15, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Love the Vlog. Well done it must have been really nerve racking doing it. As for your twang – it’s great – but at one point I needed subtitles! Where did you used to live ? Was it IOWA – ‘ cause all I heard was Awa ? Uhh! You’d laugh at my accent I’m like something out of Downton Abbey – my daughter is always telling me off for being posh. (I’m not).

As for the owl story – when I was watching the Vlog – the owl in the lane at the back of the house started hooting.
RE: future items to discuss – I”d like to know how you manage your time with a large family? Do you get any “me – time”. I find time management a real challenge and I only have one child and one husband. Where am I going wrong ?

Looking forward to future episodes! Keep up the good work. C x

Love hearing your voice! Love your inaugural vlog!

  7. Katie on September 15, 2014 at 10:40 am

I have been reading for awhile now. I’ve emailed you a couple times. I didn’t know what to expect but you sound just like my husband’s aunt from TX/OK. It’s fun to have a voice to put with your written word!

  8. Annie S on September 15, 2014 at 10:47 am

It is really nice to have a voice to put with the face. I didn’t notice much twang, your warnings had me expecting more. though I’m from Kentucky so I might be slightly immune to hearing it. πŸ™‚

    • Kathryn on September 15, 2014 at 10:53 am

HA! I think it’s most noticeable in my “i’s”. But, yes, I think southerners don’t hear the twang as much. Truthfully, I think I’m sassier in person!

  9. Victoria on September 15, 2014 at 11:49 am

Girl, You crack me up! Your fear of birds and OWLS made me laugh out loud. Okay, so, Love love the vlog. Do more. You’re adorable and love hearing/seeing you. πŸ™‚ And, totally getting one of those locks on pantry when we get there. And little Luke, oh my! Who knew!?! Happy Monday mama.

  10. Beth on September 15, 2014 at 1:10 pm

Been reading your blog for awhile. How fun to hear you! I don’t believe I have ever heard my state pronounced like that LOL! You are great and I really do enjoy Southern drawl. My best friend moved to AR and has picked it up, and her daughters sound just like they could have been born there πŸ™‚

  11. Beth (A Mom's Life) on September 15, 2014 at 1:16 pm

LOVE the accent. Whenever you talk about having one I always think, no way! But sure enough! You do us southern girls proud!

  12. Mary on September 15, 2014 at 1:28 pm

You id a great job!! I loved hearing your “twang”. It’s like we are just having a chat. Honesty is refreshing. I only had one child who could bath himself and I still question his effectiveness from time to time LOL! Love and hugs from Virginia!!

  13. Sonya on September 15, 2014 at 1:39 pm

Vlog was good. I always like having a voice and a face match up in my brain.

On an ongoing basis though, I prefer the text for a couple of reasons: 1) I can sneak in to the computer and read it without my kids following me. If they hear a voice that isn’t mine, they come running to “see”. 2) I find it easier to get interrupted with text because when I come back to it I can quickly scan to see what the topic was where I finished, but with the vlog I’d need to back it up a bit and replay. Not a big deal, but a mental barrier for me. I guess for me, I’m more visual than auditory so I prefer to have my info in print form.

It’s always good to try something different because we all think and function differently. Just because print works best for me, doesn’t mean that it is the best for others.

    Thanks for all you share!

  14. MaryMargaret on September 15, 2014 at 1:42 pm

LOVE your twang. Made me miss TX so so much. People in AL definitely have an accent, but it’s nothing like that sweet Texas drawl. πŸ™‚ Also loved the Jim Gaffigan reference!! His parenting stories are hilarious. Keep the vlogs coming!

  15. Kelly on September 15, 2014 at 1:51 pm

I think your accent is adorable! Loved the vlog.

  16. Micaela on September 15, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Love the vlog! Also fun hearing your voice! You Definitely have a TX twang to this Missourian. πŸ™‚ As a young catholic mom I find myself reading your blog quite regularly!! And being able to see you come to life in a video is great!! I vote both! More vlogs but keep writing too! Thanks so much for your honesty, example, and love of the Holy Catholic Church!

  17. Kimberly on September 15, 2014 at 2:56 pm

I love the vlog! That story about the bird is terrifying. Keep’em comin!

  18. Kati on September 15, 2014 at 3:34 pm

I loved it! It makes me want to be your friend that you talk on the phone with, because I imagine the “talk to you later, byyye” is exactly your phone sign off. I think it’s a fun thing to do a vlog every now and again.

  19. Kristina on September 15, 2014 at 4:28 pm

“I love owls in theory, not in person” = priceless!!

Loved it! Took a little bit to convince my 3 year old daughter that we weren’t having a FaceTime chat though – she’s like, “Hi! hi! Who’s that?!”

    But yes to vlogs πŸ™‚

  20. Melody on September 15, 2014 at 5:38 pm

You are adorable! and because you asked… I will watch a premier vlog about 25% of the time. After that, I do not watch. I don’t have the time or patience. I am a reader. I will watch video clips of various things but vlogs are kind of like people reading to me. I don’t prefer it and almost always pass over. But you are sweet and I know many will love it. πŸ™‚

  21. Laura on September 15, 2014 at 6:56 pm

I love the vlog! Your voice and vibe is very calming … not really what I expected since you seem like such a go-getter! The pantry tip is priceless….now, what to do about the fridge! Just bought the Southern Living cookbook. I am in a meal rut and this should give me some idea. Thanks for being brave and putting your “live” face out there!

  22. Nicole on September 15, 2014 at 7:20 pm

LOVE, love, love seeing and hearing you! πŸ™‚ I’ve missed that twang! And for the record… Our children watched it – and Claire was trying to figure out what you said when you mentioned “Iowa”. So funny… I totally remember going to visit my cousins in Minnesota as a child. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what one of them said when they were asking if we’d like to go for a ride in their wagon. It sounded like “way-gun”. I was clueless. Do more vlogs. I can always learn something from you. A lock on the pantry?! We may need to try that… I’m off to try to get our kiddos down for bed before the MNF game starts. I’m not gonna make it! A big hug to you!

  23. Jen @ Jumping in Puddles on September 15, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Ahhh!!! I just loved it. Your voice is… so sweet, and welcoming, and I felt like you were giving us a hug or something! πŸ™‚ I’d keep watching you, lady!

And… oh my gosh. I can’t believe there was a BIRD in your BATHTUB. Ah! When I was growing up, we had an issue with mice. One time I walked down to the basement, into the unfinished laundry room and looked up to see these little beedy eyes looking at me. Blah. Still gives me the heeby jeebys!

  24. Amanda on September 15, 2014 at 9:26 pm

Loved the vlog and the bird story! Nice to hear your voice after imagining the way it sounded in my head while reading! Thanks for your great advice on all kinds of subjects. Always enjoy!

  25. Teresa on September 15, 2014 at 10:32 pm

Loved your video – SO hard to do unselfconsciously and you carried it off perfectly. Southern girl here too (Mississippi) so you sound just right to me honey.
Like an earlier commenter I was surprised too at how calm and mellow your voice was because your written voice is a bit different (perkier? enthusiastic? Oh dear I’m not conveying what I mean to….) any whoo – love both voices – loved the whole thing. Thank you for doing this!

  26. Lindsay V on September 15, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Love the twang– you did great!

  27. Lori on September 15, 2014 at 11:12 pm

Loved the vlog and the accent!

  28. Meg on September 15, 2014 at 11:54 pm

Your bedtime story sounds like Bill Cosby’s “The same thing happens every night.” (We listened to the cassettes on family road trips when I was little. My brother’s text alert tone and ringtone are both clips from “Noah.”)

  29. Elisabeth on September 16, 2014 at 2:00 am

So nice to hear your voice ! But…, because English isn’t my native language, it’s much easier to read.

  30. Gina on September 16, 2014 at 8:38 am

I loved it as I got to see and hear you in person! Man, your twang has gotten worse since you left Iowa! LOL! I love it though! You look amazing!

I love hearing and reading about your life! You are so honest and it makes me feel good to know that I am not the only one who experiences the good and the bad! πŸ™‚

    Love and miss ya, girlfriend!

  31. Connie on September 16, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Love you EVEN more and am more amazed by you! Wonder what S would have done if he had 4 more siblings growing up beside Kory Lynn……Bryant might have given some away> LOVE TEAM WHITAKER!

  32. Nicole on September 17, 2014 at 12:17 pm

I just watched your vlog and thought it was great! I love putting voices with faces. It was fun, and as a once in a while thing, I love it. Like a couple of the others, I prefer to read, but that’s mostly due to my system limitations with youtube at times.

Keep up your great work! I love your willingness to share and connect with all of us readers.

  33. Alice on September 20, 2014 at 7:29 am

    Please do more vlogs Kathryn!!!!!!!

  34. Michelle on September 23, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Loved it! Thanks for being honest bout bath times, and perhaps a bit of yelling going on to get em in there πŸ™‚ we have all been there, and I only have four! Could you please please talk about choosing catholic school, did you ever feel drawn to homeschool or public school, do you feel like your kiddos spend enough time together if they are in school and activities a lot? Thank you!!

  35. Tanya on September 25, 2014 at 4:41 am

    Kathryn,
    Thrilled to watch this vlog.
Can you please do a vlog with the story of how you and Scott met and fell in love?
    Thank you, Tanya.

    • Kathryn on September 29, 2014 at 10:10 pm

It’s coming! But I think I’ll bungle it if I tell it, so that one will get written + photos!

  36. Shandra on October 3, 2014 at 8:26 am

LOVED it! Girl, you are precious!
