QOTW: January 8, 2010
“I just registered…for a 10k.”
If you knew me in high school, college or even now, you know that I am NOT an exercise person…at all. Not even a little bit. I have this great metabolism, compliments of my dad’s side of the family, that allows you to eat what you want and not really gain weight. That’s pretty much worked out great for me until I had Luke. My abs (or lack thereof) are no longer muscles and while the scale says I should still fit in my skinny jeans, everything got moved around a bit. Mostly centering in that hip area 🙂 Plus, I need some stress relief from mommyhood of 5. I think the experience with Luke has reprioritized some things for me and it’s culminated into some real life changes.
Enter an article that popped up on my iPhone app for the Austin American-Statesman – “Training programs can get you ready for the 10k.” Why I opened it and read it I have no idea. But I did. And the wild hair was let loose. I’m really going to do it. I did post it as my status update on fb, so it must be the gospel truth.
Quite honestly, I’m writing it down here because I need accountability. For as long as I’ve known myself (ha) I’ve wanted to be a better version of myself. I want to be active. I want my kids to be active. But, going to the gym isn’t my gig. Workout videos in the comfort of my living room? Nope. So, I figured I should go big or go home. So here I am, 35 years old and I needed a goal. A kick in the hiney.
Wish me luck! I’ve gotten some support from some awesome friends here in Austin and we plan on running it together. Nothing like accountability. Race is April 11.
Capitol 10k, here I come!
That's awesome! More power to you- I am not a runner. The C-section has definitely been different for me. I am hoping at some point to get out of my maternity jeans and sweatpants.
Oh, and have you read the Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly? The whole "better version of myself" thing is his mantra. I'm reading it right now.
So proud of you!! You will love running (once you start I promise it's addictive!)
My best advice is to find a good online training program. I love Hal Higdon (or join a training group, there are lots of good ones in Austin!). I'd start with some hills the hills there are pretty tough!
Also thanks for your christmas traditions post, we started the praying for our friends who sent us cards tradition. My kids like it so much we are going to to keep doing it until we run out of cards!!
Elizabeth I am not a runner either. Shoot I'm not even an exerciser. Buy I'm gonna go for it anyway! Love Matthew Kelly's book. It's awesome.
Abby great advice. I actually signed up with Rogue training and I start next week. Can't wait! Those hills are not going to be fun.
I'm so proud of you! And inspired (again). Way to go. That c-section will get you every time. I bounced back after c-section numero uno pretty nicely. C-section numero dos…notsomuch.
That's awesome Kathryn – I started running after my second was born – it's amazing what a mom will do for a little peace & quiet time for herself!! Enjoy! If you feel really motivated – come down to San Antonio and run the half marathon in November – I think I've got Christina (Horz) Martin convinced to run it with me this year!
You go, girl! And just think how many books you can "read" while running…to take your mind off of what you're doing. That's what I did while training for the "death march" in Italy in 2000.
